Learn more →What to Expect During a Diagnostic Visit
Most diagnostic visits follow a clear, efficient process designed to get answers quickly.
- Symptom review & history — about 5 minutes to understand what's happening
- Full physical exam by your veterinarian — 10-15 minutes to identify areas of concern
- Recommended tests — bloodwork, X-rays, ultrasound, or other diagnostics as needed
- In-house results ready in 10-30 minutes for most tests
- Results explained in plain language before you leave when possible
- Clear treatment plan and follow-up, or referral if specialized care is needed
Digital X-Ray: Clear Answers, Fast
Digital X-rays use safe, low-dose radiation to create instant images of your pet's bones, chest, abdomen, and joints. At El Toro Animal Hospital, they help us diagnose problems during the same visit so you leave with confidence and a clear plan.
Injury & Mobility
Fractures, arthritis, spinal issues, limping causes
Digestive Blockages
Swallowed objects, bladder stones, blockages
Heart & Lung Health
Breathing changes, circulation issues
Ongoing Conditions
Arthritis, masses, dental disease
When we recommend X-rays
- Limping, trauma, or unexplained pain
- Vomiting, not eating, or abdominal swelling
- Coughing, breathing changes, or lethargy
- Pre-surgical screening or monitoring chronic issues
What your pet experiences
Most pets need no sedation; they stand or lie on a padded table while we take 2–4 quick images from different angles (under 5 minutes total). The process is painless with minimal radiation—much safer than older film X-rays. Results are ready immediately for your veterinarian to review with you.
How X-rays guide decisions
X-rays help us confirm fractures vs sprains, find blockages before surgery, check heart/lung function, and monitor arthritis or masses. They reduce guesswork and often avoid exploratory surgery. We recommend X-rays only when they'll change your pet's treatment plan.
X-rays also support advanced dental evaluations when paired with dental radiography — helping identify disease below the gumline that isn't visible during a standard oral exam.

Ultrasound: Seeing More Without Surgery
Ultrasound uses sound waves (not radiation) to create real-time images of your pet's internal organs. At El Toro Animal Hospital, it lets us look inside the abdomen or chest without surgery and often gives you answers the same day.
What ultrasound helps us find
- Abdominal issues: liver, kidneys, spleen, stomach, intestines, bladder
- Masses and tumors: lumps you can and cannot feel
- Fluid and inflammation: fluid in the chest or abdomen, inflamed organs
- Pregnancy: confirming pregnancy and monitoring fetal health
When we recommend ultrasound
- New symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, appetite changes, belly pain or swelling
- Abnormal bloodwork or X-rays that need a closer look
- Lumps or masses found on exam or imaging
- Senior pets when we're checking for age-related changes
What your pet experiences
Most pets do not need sedation; they lie on a padded table with a team member gently holding them. A small area of fur is shaved, gel is applied, and the scan—painless and quiet—usually takes about 15–30 minutes. In most cases, we review results and next steps with you the same day.
How ultrasound guides decisions
Ultrasound helps us decide whether your pet can be treated at home or needs hospitalization or surgery, and it often helps avoid unnecessary exploratory surgery. It also guides where to take samples if needed and clarifies prognosis so your family can make informed choices. We recommend ultrasound only when it is likely to change what we do for your pet—never "just because."
